I have these two 10-gallong hoods each with a pair of 15w incandescent bulbs, you all know the type. This morning, I replaced one of them with 2 compact flourescent 13w bulbs (light output approx 60w each), and oh my God it's scary! You haven't every seen a 10 gallon until you see it at 120w of light! I can grow plants now!

I'm now searching for as many incandescent hoods as I can, I wanna double-up a set on my 29g... 240w is within my grasp!

I just did that with my 20 Gallon. What a difference. I had two 25watt bulbs in there now I have the 11w=50w incadescent florescent compacts in there. The colours look better and the plants are waking up.

watch out.... with that much light your bound to get some funky algae!!!!!

i had 25w on my 2.5 gallon... and i had some neon green thick carpet algae growing. if i left the tank alone for too long i would begin to get an assortment of algaeies.

:D

on my 10 i consider the flourescents as 13 still, they are bright but not that much brighter then even the standard 15w( atleast imo).. if i was to go that way i have somewhere around 13.5ish wpg (15w hood on aswell, cut the incandecent one up to fit both :p) but its not nearly as bright as that.

Also a big problem is the dark space in the middle, that may no be a problem if u keep stuff low but then the light looses more instensity(sp)

Yes, I have done this as well. Of course it really isn't 120 watts of light. You are still looking at a total of 26 watts or 2.6 wpg.

I actually use 15 watt screwins. They do really help those plants grow.
