Please, everyone, let's not turn this into a debate about the merits of these fish. There are several threads out there on that already. If that happens, I will likely have to lock the thread. OG

Hey, just a question completely unrelated to the ethical issues. Could someone tell me if the glofish are still modified at the egg stage or if they are bred from an original line? I would think the latter would be more practical, but I though I remember reading otherwise. ? ? ?

Are they still available?
The Canadian government came and siezed all supplies of those guys, somethin about illegal entry and they are a bio-threat.
I think its because they didnt want us to see all the chemicals they have in the water to probe our thoughts
Oops, I used my quiet voice again:p :p

Yes, they are still being sold in the U.S. I have several dozen, and they are mainly in my 60 gallon. I love them, they have given me no problems, and are just as healthy as other danios. Hence, I dont feel that modifying them is a big deal. Its when you start getting mutated fish which cannot function that it becomes a problem. If they aren't in pain, and can move just like the other fish can then there shouldn't be a problem IMO. ;)

They are pretty common here in Austin now, but I think this is because the lab with the patent is here, so initial market etc. They are still somewhat pricey ($6-$8) for what is essentially a common fish. I like their "nonglow" look of red stripes, but they look a bit too much like my white clouds to investigate further. Maybe if they come down in price a bit.

They really do look "common". They had a few at a LFS here.
