One of my rosy barbs is very pregnant (or filled with eggs...what's the correct term, gravid?). She is the only rosy barb in a tank with other tetras right now. I have a few male rosy barbs in other tanks, but I don't want to put them together until I can empty a tank and set it up properly so that the eggs won't get eaten.

Typically how long will the female hold her eggs (when there are NO males present) before she will have to drop them?

Indefinitely. I have heard they can also reabsorb them. The usual term, btw, is ripe. Not sure about gravid - I think this is the correct term for a 'pregnant' livebearer.
