There are many brackish fish that I just love, such as gobies, puffers, eels, etc. And I would be happy to keep these guys. So I had a question about what their water needs are. Granted brackish water is part marine water, however I have often read to add '1 teaspoon of salt per gallon' in order to meet the fishes' needs. So, do fish who inhabit 'light brackish' enviornments NEED synthetic sea salt (Ex. Instant Ocean) or would they be fine with some more normal aquarium salt?

They don't need the full marine salt, but they need more than 1 tablespoon per gallon to be true bracksih conditions. The marine mixes include a few other good trace minrals, which can be helpful to the fish (iodide, buffers, etc).

One thing to keep in mind...Many fish are brackish as juveniles, but need full marine conditions as adults.

I disagree. To make true BW, it is made with marine salt. You will need a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity to be sure how much salt to add.

Also, I wouldn't keep a puffer with a slow-moving fish like an eel.
Let me know if you are interested in some good BW info sites.

So, do 'light brackish fish' need the additional minerals and trace elemtents in sea water, or are they content to swim around with some more aquarium salt in their tank?

Also, I wouldn't keep a puffer with a slow-moving fish like an eel.
Don't worry pufferpunk, I wasn't planing on it and I'll take up your offer for some Good Brackish Water sites, Thanks

BW occure in the streams between the ocean & FW lakes & ruvers. The ocean has Marine salt in in, not just salt. I try to copy their natural environment as close as possible. I guess it would be like just feeding your dog generic grocery store dog food, as compared to a high quality pet shop dog food. How healthy do you think you dog will wind up? (I know salt isn't food, but I couldn't think of a better analogy.)

I agree with pufferpunk.. the aquarium salt is too"simple" of salt to aid in the health of the tank..
Instant ocean, or equivilent, is reasonably cheap, and you really dont need a lot of it,I buy the "50 gallon" size of IO and it lasts my 55 gal brackish tank for a few months of water changes.....
