If I join my local aquarium, I can get unlimited free filtered salt water for free. I am currently using Instant Ocean and regular tap water mix. I wanted to purchase a RO unit to help cut back on algae that is growing because of my stronger lights. I started a refugium but it is still too new to compete with the diatoms, and I have turbos and hermits, but still could use more help.

I am wondering if it is better to go with RO water or the filtered sea water? I assume I would have to add suppliments to both (CA, etc) either way.

Any opinions on what would be the most beneficial, and safe choice to control the diatoms?

Where do you live in the US? If other people are using the stuff and getting good results then fine, but I strongly doubt that your local seawater is without organic wastes. I'd see what other people are doing and talk to them.
