Anybody heard of the brand "Best" play sand? Home Depot and Lowes only carry Quikcrete and Best. Which one do the pro's reccomend? The grains are very small in both and the colors are similiar. Also, for a new 75g FOWLR how deep should my dsb be?
southdown or any other of the arogonite based play sands work really well they add a little buffering to your tank and a few trace elements. It really doesn't make all that much of difference though if you use silica you'll have no problems. It's really the grain size and the anoxic conditions that you achieve with a sand bed that you're after.

From what I've learned through my online research of the subject, you'll want your deep sand bed (DSB) to measure a minimum of 3 inches in depth, but 4-5 inches will likely be more ideal.
The Wal-Marts in my area sell Old Castle Sand ( also called Southdown) under their Wal-Mart label. Check your Wal-Mart! Old Castle has a PA manufacturing address on the label.
