Is a sand substrate ok for a gibbeceps pleco, and
Will pictus cats bother said pleco in a 50 gal tank?

The two fish should get along fine. The pleco will get very very big (16-18") so I would not recommend sand, because a fish that big will kick it up when he swims, but it is possible to do it.

I've kept Plecos with Sand before. I never had to worry about them kicking the sand up. However I DID have to worry about them eating the sand. Becuase of this I switched back to gravel, just to be safe. I never got a yes or no on if the sand actually hurt the pleco. They DID love the sand. My Rhino was actually building little sand dunes around his rock so he could hide better.
