"OSLO, Norway (Aug. 22) - Edvard Munch's famous paintings "The Scream," "Madonna" and others were stolen from an art museum Sunday while stunned museum-goers watched armed men threatening the staff at gunpoint as they took the art work to a waiting car.

"We don't have all the details on the situation, but we are searching for the suspects in the air and on land," Police Spokesman Kjell Moerk told the public radio network NRK.

A French radio producer, Francois Castang, said he was visiting the Munch Museum in Oslo when thieves burst in and made off with the paintings, including the painter's depiction of an anguished figure with its head in its hands.

"The Scream" was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893.

"What's strange is that in this museum, there weren't any means of protection for the paintings, no alarm bell," Castang told France Inter radio.

"The paintings were simply attached by wire to the walls," he said. "All you had to do is pull on the painting hard for the cord to break loose - which is what I saw one of the thieves doing."

Castang said police arrived on the scene 15 minutes later. Visitors were ushered into the museum's cafeteria.

In February 1994, "The Scream" was stolen from the museum and remained missing for nearly three months. Police ultimately recovered the work, which is on fragile paper, undamaged in a hotel in Asgardstrand, about 40 miles south of the capital, Oslo. Three Norwegians were arrested.

At the time, investigators said the trio tried to ransom the painting, demanding US$1 million from the government. it was never paid.

Munch, a Norwegian painter and graphic artist who worked in Germany as well as his home country, developed an emotionally charged style that was of great importance in the birth of the 20th century Expressionist movement.

He painted "The Scream" in 1893, as part of his "Frieze of Life" series, in which sickness, death, anxiety, and love are central themes. He died in 1944 at the age of 81.

The National Art Museum owns 58 paintings by Munch.

Yah. Especially since it was ALREADY stolen once in '94. My guess is they didn't learn their lesson.

It was actaully another version of the same painting (there are four of them) that was stolen in 94, but the point still rings true. They were saying on the news last nights that as these are the second most recognised paintings after the Mona Lisa (which is now behind bullet proof glass) that security should have been much better.
But I'm wondering if you have stolen one of the most recognised paintings in the world what are you going to do with it now? You can't exactly hang it in your house.....

ABC is reporting that they found the getaway car (Audi A6) and pieces of one or both of the frames. If they're finding parts of the frames, that can't be good news.
Especially as these were painted on paper not canvas, they will be even more fragile.....

If pieces of frames are found they're probably rolling them in cases for moving them. As to the lack of security, that's typical Norway. I lived there for 4 1/2 years and robbery and much of any crime is very rare. This is a country with less than 6 armed robberies a year, and obtaining just hunting rifles is difficult. However, with a famous painting that was stolen once it seems weird to still not safeguard it some way.

There are many very wealthy people that would gladly purchase illegally obtained and highly recognizable art.

The painting will be hung up on the wall of Bill Gate's basement by weeks end.

I cant believe this, its the first I've heard of it. Edvard Munch is my absolute favorite artist. I'm currently having the Madonna tattooed on my BACK for goodness sake, and have a woodcut that he did entitled Allegory/Hemanthus on my arm. I have plans for the other arm which I'm thinking about getting Attraction (the lithograph). I'm devestated...... :sad

My question is....."Why"?

Why steal something like that. You'll never be able to say, "it's the original one". For the simple fact, there is only one, and if its stolen....your responcible.

Maybe Im :OT: , I dunno.
