I just placed a male and female betta in a 2.5 gallon mini bow in hopes they would spawn. The female is horrible towards the male grabbing his fin and attacking him non stop. I put the divider in the tank to keep them apart. Is this behavior normal.

ya some, and I just have exp with the males but asume females to be the same way, bettas are really agressive ie don't put anything in with them and some are fine in comunity settings and might tollerate male if the tank is big enough and the other male was of similar tempermate.

so ya some bettas are basicly SOB's and nothing you can do about that cept do what you have done and separate them. but there are those that will do just fine together.

Yeh putting a male and a female together can lead to some rough-housing! I bred some a month ago and it was the male that was the ruffian.
Some good sites on this are:

and the ever amusing

We didn't follow the directions exactly and we are only feeding frozen brine shrimp and we have ten healthy babies at the moment and the female grew back her fins really quickly.

Nature will takes its course or one will die! Watching the male in action is classic, unfortunately we missed the egg-laying moment--they waited for privacy! :) Enjoy!
