I have a 55 gallon setup that I want to grow moderate to high light plants in. The tank has a division along the center so that I can put either 2 24" lights or one 48" inch light across the top. It came with a 48" 40W 50/50 bulb.

My plan is to get 2 65W bulbs to use in addition to the 40W I've currently got. My first question is, is that okay to do? Or should I not use that first bulb at all?

My second question is, is there any dis/advantage to buying 2 24" strips or 1 48" strip?

ANother question (sorry if there're too many questions...) should I get the 50/50 ones or the 6700K bulbs (I'm looking at Coralife Compact strip lights on Big Al's Online).

Thanks for everyone's response in advance... these forums have been an abundance of help.

If you want that much light, your going to have to get into C02 injection and dose ferts daily or every other day. As for the colour temp on the bulbs, id go with the 6700K. and yes, it is ok to use the 40 watt 50/50 in addtion to the two 65 watt, 6700K bulbs.......

I'm also planning on doing the DOY CO2. I hadn't looked into the ferts, but I can do that as well.

I'd also go with the 6700 over the 50/50. The only disadvantage of 2 24" over one 48" might be price of the bulb(s). Look into how much 2 24" bulbs run vs. one 48". I think one 48" is cheaper...?

For ferts id reccomend using Chucks calculator and buying you NPK from a local Hydrophonics store. Very, very, very cheap if done this way. The only fert that cost me some money is the micro, because i use Flourish.

Okay, I downloaded Chuck's calculator. As soon as I can figure out how to use it, I'll figure out what I need.

Thanks for everyone's help.
