One uppence?

..N. Korea, China, Iran...

Hmm..

Link:
NY Times

"Another Air Force space program, nicknamed Rods From God, aims to hurl cylinders of tungsten, titanium or uranium from the edge of space to destroy targets on the ground, striking at speeds of about 7,200 miles an hour with the force of ....

A third program would bounce laser beams off mirrors hung from space satellites or huge high-altitude blimps, redirecting the lethal rays down to targets around the world. A fourth seeks to turn radio waves into weapons whose powers could range "from tap on the shoulder to toast," in the words of an Air Force plan.
"

Kinda wild stuff here....

Right now the US is the only country even remotely capable of doing something like this. I think it's a good idea to get started on it while we're still in that position. The Chinese are probably at least a good 30 years from being able to consider doing something similar - or trying to prepare a defense against it. And we all know about the mighty NK and Iranian space programs...

Over the past 15 years or so there's been a real push to deploy weaponry that's more efficient and keeps US soldiers out of harms way. Using the force of gravity without using a pilot to fly into danger sounds good to me.

"But General Lord said such problems should not stand in the way of the Air Force's plans to move into space.

"Space superiority is not our birthright, but it is our destiny," he told an Air Force conference in September. "Space superiority is our day-to-day mission. Space supremacy is our vision for the future."
"

These lines make you think...

Do it - or someday live under some other countries laws and ways.

Quite a bold statement.

It's very forward thinking. I mean, right now the US has complete air supremecy, not only because of numbers and technology, but because it's the only fully deployable air force in the world. We can hit targets anywhere in the world. Some countries have the ability to defend themselves, but none have anything beyond a regionally deployable air force. But that may be changing - the Chinese are constantly working on improving their defensive and offensive capabilities. Some day I'm sure there will be a fight for the skies.

However, right now we have the opportunity to control that which is above the skies... and as long as you can get over your enemy, you can defeat him.

Do I sense a hint of nervousness about this on your part, Joe?

Weapon superiority is one reason I support the building of an American Space Tether. Sounds stupid, I know... but instead of dropping a tungsten rod, with the Tether System, not only could we make getting into orbit cheaper by a factor of 10, we can also drop plain ol' boulders from 20,000 miles up. Cheaper than tungsten, cheaper to get into space, and while not pretty... very VERY effective.

Space militarization IS going to happen. It's just a matter of when. New technologies usually make the best progress when driven thru the filters of militarization or pornography.

No I haven't, but it doesn't surprise me that there are things that aren't nuclear that are nasty with out the side effects. Makes me wonder why some of these countries are in such a hurry to "develop" them. Except the obvious.

Well, everyone wants to play in the big boy's sandbox. However, it's looking more and more like we have the only bucket and shovel.

Maybe I'm the odd one out here but I think it's pretty scary. There's always such a rush to build bigger and more destructive weapons when the money could be spent on better things. Once the technology is invented it's only a matter of time before it lands in the wrong hands. Other nations become paranoid that they are left wide open with no defense. It's already happening with nuclear power. Is power so important nowadays?
