Okay first off let me thank whoever might be reading this and willing to respond to my questions

Quick run down of my tank. 55 gallons, black oynx sand substrate, 5 cories, clown pleco, and 2 painted tetras, only real plant so far is java moss if you would call that a plant.

Well i would like to ditch all or most of the plastic plants in my aquarium since im taking out all the fake decorations and moving towards a real natural look. I would like to move towards some real plants without worrying about any kind of CO2 injection of any kind.

So here is my first question, when is it necessary to do co2 injection? does it depend on the kind of plants? the amount of plants? the amount of light?

What kind and/or how many plants can i have without needing any kind of co2?

Next im buying some driftwood that is mounted on a piece of slate so im going to have to buy some more substrate since i really dont have enough to cover up the slate. I was thinking about buying some Eco-Complete Plant Substrate to mix with my onyx sand. I was thinking it might be a good choice cause it would provide for any kind of rooted plants plus hopefully look good mixed in well with my black onyx sand. Does anyone have any kind of suggestions about mixing these 2?

My lighting system really sucks right now. I have two 24" all-glass lighting strips with 15watt bulbs. Im going to get some glass tops and buy a light that stands on top. I was looking at one of these 2 lights on ebay. Any suggestions on either of these two?

Choice #1
OR
Choice #2

Also when dealing with any additives for plants, how does this effect the fish? Am i limited to the amount or kinds of fish to add due to plants? or is everything going to be alright for the fish? I recently just got rid of alot of my fish and im planning on getting more after i finish with the planting and changes in my tank setup.

Those are the only questions that i can think of at the moment. I would appricate any advice or suggestions.

If you're going over 2.5wpg then I would really think about adding CO2. I suppose plant mass would be a factor if you had, say, one anacharis there wouldn't be much point :) But most people who plant there tank will end up going for a natural look which means more plants.

Depends on your lighting.

They will mix fine but you will find the the finer grained onyx sand will slowly sink to the bottom along with the finer particles of eco. Not a bad thing though.

The light fixtures are fine and will give you medium light. You could get away with no CO2 at 2wpg. The bulbs themselves would have to be replaced (they are for SW) with something more suitable like 6700K.

Yes. If you want to keep cichlid, angels, discus, etc then you would have to plan the tank ahead of time and plant accordingly. For a community there's a bit more leeway. That's not to say that only community tanks look better than more specialist fish tanks. It really comes down to plant choice and arrangement.

So i went ahead and ordered the first choice. Now where can i go to find T5 bulbs? I dont want to end up buying bulbs that dont work and get stuck with them. Also is their a difference between T5 and T5 HO?
