Started a 55 gal tank 12/12/02. Added 8 fish on 1/1/03 nitrite .25 &
0 amonia PH 7.8. Adding Cycle to establish bacteria & 1/8/03 adding
proper PH to try to get Ph down (started out with well water). Amonia
climbs a bit to 1. nitrite stays low .25. PH still 7.8. adding cycle regularly.
Adding PH down 1/10, 1/12 & 1/13 PH now about 7.6. 1/19/03 PH 7.6
amonia 0 nitrite 5. Water on 1/22/03 now green & algae forming on tank

added 7 more fish but have lost 2 of them. Total fish:13. 1/23 shrubed
sides of tank & tank rocks, plants to remove algae. Added more Cycle.
1/27 tank still has green water added more Algae destroyer. 1/30/03
cleaned out Fluval 304 filter sponges in removed tank water & vacumed

water & 4 gal well water (all @ proper tank temp).1/31 water still lime
green added 1 Chinese algae eater. Took out 2 gal tank water adding
2 gal distilled water. Amonia 0, PH 7.2 & nitrite .25 (finnally). 2/1/03 water

OK,
From what I am reading here. More than likely your fish have died for a couple of reasons. One being your tank is going through the cycling process with high amonia at first and then Nitrites. This is normal. It is also being compounded by an algae bloom which in turn can strip the water of of oxygen amking it very hard for the fish to get enough O2 to live. In one months time you have done a lot of changes to your tank that can cause enough stress to do a few fish in as well.

At this point I would suggest doing some good 30% water changes with out adding algacides to the tank. You can premix your water in buckets to adjust the PH before adding it to the tank. You dont want to add any new fish to the tank at this time nor do you want to add anymore "cycle" to your tank as this will compound the problem. Algae growth is a normal thing and at this stage in the game I would not be worried about it for now. The first thing to do is to get your tank stable before adding more chemicals. You can clear up the water through water changes and the use of carbon in your filters. For a 55g tank you should have about 1-2 cups of carbon for clearing up the water.

What do you have for a set up? Please list everything that you can think of.
