Hi there. I noticed today that one of my angels seems to have a problem with its mouth. Looks like it cant close it all the way. It can open more but not close more. Looks like the lower part is kinda white..maybe some kind of infection? Otherwise it looks healthy and eats well. I do have another male in the tank which is not as dominant. Could they have faught?

Should I take it out and put it in a quarantine tank or just let it be? I'm afraid to add salt to the tank because I have a large apple snail in there.

Also if I was to put it in the quarantine tank, what should I put in there? I do have some melafix if that might help.

I'm not sure if angelfish lock jaws like other cichlids, but I guess that could be the case. (my angels never showed any aggressive behavior towards each other, so I don't have any experience with angelfish aggression)

It could be mouth rot (I would expect it to be fluffier though), but when I first saw the pic, I thought it had burned it's mouth on a heater.

I would quarantine it and add the melafix. If you don't have a cycled quarantine tank, then add a few handfuls of gravel from your main tank into the quarantine tank. If you don't have an extra filter, buy a sponge filter or something, make sure the q-tank is well aerated (you need well aerated water when using melafix).

Good luck and HTH

I think I will move him in the quarantine tank...I can set that up real eazy because I have an empty 38 gallon on a stand and I have a spare 2213 eheim filter thats been running in conjunction to a huge 2260 on my 100 gallon. I put that 2213 when I emptied my 38 gallon a while back and didnt want to get rid of the built up bacteria in there. I can just put that filter back. I will get water out of the 100 gallon since its already established.

Btw I've never seen heater burn before... is it common for it to happen? I use a 250w ebo-jagger.
