My son found a huge clam shell in the neighborhood pond/lake and wants to put in the tank. If I sterilize it by boiling it for an hour or so, is that sufficient? Any thing else I should do? Any problems with putting it in the tank?

Thanks for the info., as he really wants it in the tank.

Boiling it for an hour will pretty much kill any little nasties on it...was this a freshwater clam?
Keep an eye on pH and GH (but you'd do that anyway, right? ;)) so you can see if it leaches too much calcium into your water.

Thank you sky eyes. I boiled it for almost 2 hours, and it still had some algae attached to it, I was pretty surprised. That algae is pretty tough.
