Depends completely on the tank, and tank mates. As an all around favorite though I would have to go with a, generally speaking, a farlowella species.

I agree...we have a 6 inch farlowella and we just adore him. He's interesting, very peaceful and really cool looking.

i have only have the china ones they get a bit big eh? or i am not sure what it was.

I guess Bristlenose Pleco's are my favorites by default. These are the only algae eaters that are in my tanks.

my vote went to ottos. they stay behind the scenes and are easy to maintain. I also have a farlawella and i enjoy amano shrimp too

There are so many more than what is listed.
Here is just a few of my favorites.
Amano Shrimp: fantastic little eaters.
The Florida Flag Fish
Black Mollies
Sword tails
Siamese Algae Eaters
Ameca Splendens aka butterfly Goodeid
Malyasian Trumpet Snails

But the number one remover of Alage is my Razor Scraper.
