Ok, I am ready to buy a Canister Filter, I have four options.

1. Eheim Ecco Canister Filter 2236

2. Rena FilStar xP3 Canister Filter

3. Fluval Canister Filter, Model 404

4. Eheim Classic External Canister 2217

Talk me out of buying each one, or talk me into buy one over the other.

I couldn't agree more with sardesign. I used to have a 2026 on my 55g planted tank, but sold it when I tore down that tank. Best filter I have ever owned....by far. But out of those choices above, I'd go with the XP3.

Not just any Eheims...just the ones posted. The main difference is filtering capacity when compaired to the Ecco, and ease of cleaning when compared to the Classic. The XP3 is a very good filter for the money and I would never try to talk anyone out of buying one. I would still rather have an Eheim Pro or Pro II canister (ie the 2028 and 2026) over the XP3, however. The Eheims are just so well made, reliable and quiet.

I just ordered a Filstar XP3. I have an XP 2 and have been very pleased with it. I feel the best value for the $$. I have no reason to be dissastisfied with it, but I've not had any other cannister filters either.
www.bigalsonline.com has them on sale, and with the current free shipping, it's a bargain that's hard to beat.

The filstar is the best bang for the buck. As everyone will say, if you have the money, go with an eheim 2026. It is $100 more than the filstar on big al's.

Ok, heres the deal. This is the price I can get each one for.

Eheim PRO II EXTRNL CNSTR FLTR 2026 = $111.31

Rena Filstar xp3 = $73.49

It is employee appreciation days at Petsmart, Since my wife is a Groomer There, I can get a 30% discount. But, I am not 100% sure they have the Eheim Pro in store though. If they do that may be the way to go for the price diff. If not its the Filstar
