I have a 46 gallon tank. I now, after today of buying 2 more cichlids, have 10 cichlids, and 1 pescostomus. I have a great filtration system, so I dont think I am over stocked. Anywhoo, I bought them at petsmart, its 5 mins from me. I also have 2 plastic plants, and 3 medium size rock/wood decorations from petsmart. Now, my question is, what do cichlids like? Do they like caves? Do they like to be in the open? If they like caves, what else do u suggest I get to help them hide? Id like to do real rocks, but still dont know what rocks to go with. Thanks for all in advance!

Since you said 'African Cichlids' I'm assuming they are most likely from lake Malawi (which are usually the most common ones in those assorted african tanks).

The decor should be sand or fine gravel, and rocks. The amount of rocks depends on the type and species of cichlid... since some are rock dwellers (mbuna) and others are open water fish (haps). Usually they will pick at plants but some species can work. I would provide lots of hiding places for them since they can be aggressive. The pH should be at 8.0 - 8.4. :)

Here's a good Malawi specific site (assuming those are what you have) where you can check out proper tank set ups and species. They also have a great forum you can ask questions on. http://www.malawimayhem.com.

I would say in a 40 gallon tank you are maxed out at 10 cichlids... and you may have to remove some as they mature and become aggressive. Knowing which species you have can help you predict what they will be like when they are older... and prepare you to remove them.
