Females are more compact than males and have blue markings/splotches covering most of the area just in front of the gill plates behind the mouth, the males have just a few blue spots in this area, but overall are more colorful than the females with numerous tiny blue speckles covering the flanks. The male's fins are also longer and more pointed. Females usually grow to around 7", while males normally grow to around 9-10".
