Ok, there is a possibility I might be the new owner of an 80 gallon tank/hood/custom oak stand (for $200!! ) Soooo, being a noob with a beginning case of MTS, help me research and plan please.

I only have a 10 gallon right now, and the possibilities for an 80 overwhelm me LOL! Anyone have stocking ideas that I can research out?

What size/type of filters should I be looking at?

I don't think I can light it well enough to plant much more than java fern/moss type plants so it will probably have fakes.

Heaters...2 200 watt?

Can I get the big bags of lawn and garden type gravel for substrate?

Any other "big tank" tips ya'll can pass along?

Oh, my water is 7.2 pH, and pretty soft, so I'm thinking most African cichlids are out. I'm not sure I want an aggressive tank anyway.

Thanks ya'll
Gena

Congrats!
First, you need to decide on what kind of fish you want to have then plan the tank around them. Go to your lfs and look around, write down the names (scientific as well if possible) and go home and research, research, research. Then ask questions here.
You can still do african cichlids if you want, just get some crushed coral for your substrate, or do like I did and put some in a womens stocking and put that in your filter.
For decorating your tank check out this thread I wrote not too long ago. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68310&highlight=decorate+tank+cheap
I decorated my 85 gallon tank for less than $15 dollars. There is a link to pics in my sig as well as in that thread. The pics were taken before I added fish, it's an african tank and I almost have all the fish I want.

Nice looking tank, and WTG on the cheap! I hadn't thought about going to the quarry for stone. I know way back when I had my 55 the slate was crazy to buy at the LFS. I'm hoping for a more graceful feeling tank than Africans seem like they would provide. I may fall back on Angels as my "big fish" since I know a breeder. I dunno LOL too many choices and I don't even have the tank yet!
