This should guarantee a good smile...

"... ...Legend tells us that Hatteras Jack would even appraise the draft of the incoming vessel and carry her through only when the tide was high enough for a safe passage."

Somehow, I believe that...

And, at the end, he said, "Thanks for all the fish!" :)

Was he a dolphin or a porpoise? They call him both, I don't think they are the same.
Technically they are not the same. I'll look it up... But, I do know there are the dolphin - that are sought after by fishermen. It's nicknamed "mahi mahi".

Here's a photo of dolphin or mahi mahi...

wow.. very cool, but there are lots of porpoise (by the description of tail walking, and the intelligence, it had to be this) stories where people and porpoises work together, for hundreds of years in certain areas fishermen on the coast have been working with porpoise in the water, the porpoise drive the fish to shore, where the people catch them, the porpoise get a % of the fish after the catch is done... very cool stuff, who knows how smart these animals really are!?

Probably no one knows for sure. I like this part of the story too:

"Once the boat was through the passage, the porpoise would invariably put on a fascinating show of tail walks, jumps, and barrel rolls, seemingly in delight at a job well done."

To me, that shows intent and personality!
Quite amazing...
