I am cycling a 54 gal corner bowfront tank to set up for angelfish and maybe discus. My question is Could I prop a piece of slate slightly against my heater to keep them from lying eggs on the heater? I have been unble to find mesh to put around my heater at the local fish store. Will this damage my heater?

slate will work, but plasitc canvas(from craft stores, even at walmart) will work even better, becuase there is no way a determined discus will squeze through it.

Just remember that the actual casing that protects the heating element is made of glass.....

Other than the fact that it could brake with a good bump and fry your fish, i wouls say there is no problem with it.... just make sure that you lay the rock against it softly and that it has no possibility of moving or cracking the glass.....

JMO tho
