I have an Arowana in Asia and I was just curious why it is illegal in the US. It's a very cool fish to have and they also symbolize luck for a lot of chinese businessman in Asia.

Because the US Fish and Wildlife Service is too lazy to make a determination as to whether an Arowana is captive bred or not. Under CITES and USFWS' own website it's legal to import captive bred Appendix I animals. They just won't issue permits.

Ok, thanks for that input. But I heard that the silver Aruwanas are legal in the US? I am not so sure but confuse!

Wow, if I was a fish, I SURELY would not winter in Canada. I heard that even if they get loose, in the wild, in Canada, they all go south to California and Florida for the winter! They like it so much, they just never return!

    Regards (with a chuckle),

Silver, Black, Jardine's, Leichardt's and African Arowanas are all legal with no permits required, at least at the federal level. Check the laws of your state to see if there are any laws against them at that level.

Thanks for any replies. Please include a source if possible. I will post the list if I find it first.
