I can relate to a lot of those from living in the sierras. Timberline is a freaking wierd thing. Driving on flats in snow is more scary than driving over a pass in snow. we had 4 seasons too, but the were old tourists, winter, rich tourists and construction. I have hiked to "the patch" off hwy 88 and skiied in august. I used to love coming hame to the bay and being able to drink 10 times what my frinds could without getting a buzz(now that im back home Im losing that ability :()
