ok, so..my mom is a huge fan of goldfish, and had 4 orandas, all at about 5 inches, she had them for almost over a year

she had them in a 45g high, untill i had a spare 55gal..so i cycled it for about a month and a half, after about a month of then being in their new home, she decided to get one more

so she got another oranda, a red capped that seemed fine and playful with the others

HOWEVER

about 4 days later i niticed, what i thought was ich, a few white spots on the tails, so i treated the water with ich meds and salt..but it had no effect..the next morning they where covered in white spots, some where even merged together, the next day, their tails where frayed and stringy, and started to rot away, used melafix for fin rot but again, no effect

their fins then became reddish with red vessels visable.

i started to think velvet after seeing them covered in the white spots, but velvet meds didnt work

and im sure its not just a bad case of ich, the spots look nothing like ich, and i've dealt with ich a lot over the 12 years i have been keeoing fish

SO, over 2 days they all died, all pretty much at the same time

i have a picture of the last one that died a day before he passed, his tail wasnt so badly frayed, but it was starting to rot..but it needs to be uploaded and coverted

again, i have never seen anything like this

anyone have any ideas?

The pic is needed to see what it could have been, but to take them out so fast may have been a type of columnaris, which is bacterial rather than a fungus. Epistylis also springs to mind and looks like spots that merge.
With bringing in any new fish to an already established set up is a recipe for disaster as 99% of fish are carrying parasites or bacteria that will infect the old ones.
What were the readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? Though bacterial infections cant be tested for.

the newer fish was quarantined for a month before adding to the tank, my apologies for not adding that

readings where normal

ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 10

WC's were done every week, filter was 2 aquaclear 110's

i will get the photo up soon, i need to get to my computer with the uploading program on it

also, im sure its not Epistylis, after viewing a few photos, it doesnt look like what im experiencing, these spots are more like ich, but all different shapes, instead of the few specks here and there, it covered the entire fish, including the eyes within 2 days

same problem im having at work in my office,
just lost x2 goldfish to the same symptoms as you described and my last one
has now contacted this and is looking worst by the hour,
I tired using Melafix at first but that didn't work.
so i have done a 60% water change using Aquasafe and now trying Protozin that i had spare at home as a last resort.
Its eating fine but not looking very active.
Hope it lasts the night.

really sorry for the loss

i wish we knew what this was, so it could be treated, i went to one of the local lfs today and every goldfish there had it to, its like some sort of plague..maybe a very bad strain of velvet

Yeah think i will resist from starting again for a few weeks.
take the tank home with me and give it a good boil clean.

I origianlly bought the goldies from a indoor market near work that looked
a bit dodgy so i better buy from a specialist next time.

RIP goldies. :fairy:
