So I've noticed that several of my fish (tiger barbs and blue rams) have taken to "eating" sand or small bits of gravel. They pick grains up and then spit them out. I know both of these fish pick through the gravel for food, but I've never seen them actually take the rock into their mouths for so long. I see my barbs making those choking faces and spiting out entire peices of flourite! The rams do the same with the pool sand in their tank.

Is this normal, or am I not feeding them enough?

I would say that this is normal. I see my cichlids do this all the time in my 125. I think they are just looking for food and then spitting out thre gravel and/or sand. I do not think that it is anything to worry about.
