Would a 20 gal high work, or would you recommend sticking with a 30 gal?
It would house 7 tiger barbs, with fake plants. Nothing more aside from a snail or 2.

Reason I ask, is at my store, we hae a used 20 gallon High tank complete with hood, heater, and filter for $60.

The 30 gallon would be better in an ideal world (greater surface area for oxygen exchange, longer tank for fish to swim) but I think they would be pretty happy in the 20 high as well.

Go for the 20. It is hard to pass up a deal like that. I think that the barbs will be very happy in thier new home.

That isn't a very good deal for a used set-up. I spent that much and got a new 20g set up. I got a used 30g for 5$, a used 38g for 20$, and a 55g gratis. You need to check craigslist, local fish clubs, and ebay.

For my 38g this is what I spent:

20$ used tank
18$ utility work stand rated for 450lbs
16$ 200w Heater from big als
19$ 48 inch 2x32w shop light
6$ 2 6700k 32w light bulbs
40$ 2 AC50

The added bonus of this was that only the tank is used, all of the other equipment is new.

I agree with the others. as long as the barbies are the only fish in the tank, they'll be fine in there.
