I recently built a double stand for 2 55s. It is a pretty basic stand out of 2x4s. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d74/crisell/IMG_1750.jpg.

Now, I want to try to build a stand that will house a 55 on the bottom and 2 20 highs on the top. However, since we are considering upgrading to a 75, I would like the stand to hold that one rather than having to build a new stand.

Since, there is a 5-6 inch difference in the width of a 55 to a 75, I tried to design the stand with 4x4s for the legs and main sides rather than 2x4s. This makes the stand base 18 inches wide to hold a 75 but, could hold a 13 inch wide 55 as well. Does this sound like it will work?

Also, since the 20H is only 12 inches wide, I think I want more support than 1/2 inch on the front and back. Could I glue and screw a 2x4 in the front (or back or both) to get the additional support needed?

I have only ever built that one other stand and don't feel that I know enough to judge whether this is a sound idea for a stable stand. I would appreciate any input from those of you with more experience/expertise on this matter.

I have included a rough sketch (made in paint, not to scale) of my idea.

The problem with adding a 2x4 to the sides is you are now relying on the screws, nails and or glue to support the weight. It can be done but what would be easier is to put a piece of 5/8" - 3/4" pylwood on the top. If you are capable of working with wood I have a generic plan can be used for building a stand here http://home.cogeco.ca/~plecosterone/Aquarium%20Stands.htm

Too many tanks are almost enough...

Are those 4X4 being used as the horizontal frames?

Bit of overkill, IMNSHO! 2X2 on end would be strong enough.

Another thing, make sure you have ample clearance on top of the 55/75 for filter maintenance etc. I thought I'd designed enough in on my double stand, but found out this last week another inch would have made it easier to get the filters in/out!

Why not just make both "shelves" 20 inches or so wide. Set the 20 gal tanks a bit back from front edge, gives a good working space.

In this thread http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95740

are pics of by double stand. 4X4's for uprights, notched for 2X4 horizontals with 2X4 supports under 1/2 MDF shelves (rabbited the tops of shelf 2X4 for MDF to lay flush). $50 for materiels, 4 hours in my buddies workshop. Hell for stout!
