ok, so last night, I do a huge maintenance on my tank. I clean the canister, trim the plants, do a water change, the works. I get up this morning and hear water falling.... I see that my tank water is about an inch low.... I look underneath, that canister is leaking. Thankfully, I place it in a bucket so the damage is realy minimal to what it could be. So I am searching and searching... I have a feeling I may have filled it too much when prepping it for placement back under the tank. I have read that there is some sort of O-ring that I am unsure about. I believe the filter is an eheim 2026 or 2028, I am more concerned with the leak. Now, what is this o-ring that people are mentioning needs silicone lubing and all that? Where should it be? I don't think I've ever seen it. I am keeping an eye on it today after setting it back up but again am a little worried about that ring.

i have two 2026 and they both have the problem. how old are yours. turns out mine were damaged where the water valve is( on the hose attachment) and it was 35 dollars for the part. see if you can find the leak before anything. some people put vaseline on the o ring but i think it isnt neccessary. let me know if you find the leak.

My eheim 2224 did the same thing a few weeks ago, i took it apart cleaned the seals and put it back together. It hasen't leaked again yet but i have ordered some more seals just incase.

the o-ring acts as the rubber stopper so water doesn't come out. im sure that's your problem. It should be around the rim of the lid (around the part that you stick into the base) and it should be kind of hard to get it in right, but it should almost pop into place.

I'm thinking it is the o-ring. I notice it's shape is like this all the way around )^( (kinda)
What I am trying to show is that the ring isn't exaclty shaped like a regular washer. The way I was putting it in was ) ( like that all the way around and it seemed not to pop right on, was kinda easy to do. Should I be putting it in with the curves showing up and down in stead of side to side? I would think I migh be setting it up wrong but am unsure. I will be going to get something tomorrow but just am not sure with it.

Hard to get a clean re-seal if the water level is above the rim.You can add a very thin layer of vasoline if the leaking persist.Usually a refit will fix the problem.I like to give the lid three quick push downs when putting the lid back on.

I went and got some kind of liquid sealer today... hoping that works. Nothing else has...

and yes, the gasket does seem a bit loose. I don't know if I am placing it right or explaining. Now, I tried to put it curve side vertically but I can't get it to work. For the curve side horizontally, it just slips on too easily without a snap...

here's a photo for what I mean of the curve.

Your gasket may simply be worn out from staying in the same position for so long. I reccomend buying a new gasket, or seeing if you can get some of the flexibility back in that one. It looks "dry" so to speak.. You should be able to get one from your LFS, if not you should be able to order online and maybe get an overnight delivery..

Good luck girl!

If you read in the instrution booklet it says that it is wise to preplace these every 1-3 years.

The wear out, exspecially when you open and seal it alot.

by the way you can get the parts here.

ouch...the gasket alone is $30 ...But I guess if it only needs replacing every few years the cost isnt too bad ...but still :(
