well, im getting a 40 gallon breeder soon to house my pike. now, i have a 100 watt heater. would that be sufficient for my tank or should i go with something with a higher wattage? the 100 watt i got is an aquaclear submersible, u know, the ones they sell at pet supplies plus for like 15 dollars. its ok and keeps my current tank at a steady temperature, but it makes an annoying click when the indicator light flashes on. so if i need a bigger heater, then what brands do you all recommend? im looking for something that will last a while and do its job with like no noise from the light. no adjusting or anything for temperature, just set, plug, and forget.
thanks

I'd get a 200W Visitherm Stealth. There are those who like redundant heaters, you could go w/ a pair of 150W ones - they're cheapest online :: makes allusion to Petsmart price matching threads ::

In my experience, Visi-Therm Stealth heaters are the best. They're accurate, reliable, dependable, silent, and coated in black thermal plastic so they're a little bit safer for the fish, they blend pretty well into the background and there are no annoying lights. In a 40g you could get away with just one 200w heater, but I prefer to have two lower-wattage heaters, just in case. Even with the best equipment, mechanical failure is always a possibility. If you've got two, there's a backup if one fails somehow.

However, just a note - I wouldn't recommend setting a heater (even a high quality one) and forgetting about it completely. It's always a good idea to check your tank temps often, just as a precaution. I keep those little floaty thermometers in my small tanks and check them while feeding and doing water changes, and in the big tanks I have digital alarm thermometers that go off if the temp goes outside the safety window I set. Admittedly, this does no good if I'm not home (I have my doubts about the cat's ability or desire to rescue the fish from being cooked) but there are only so many precautions you can reasonably take before you become a weirdo shut-in crazy fish person.

im looking at these fluval tronic heaters. they seem pretty impressive and ebay has them real cheap. the jagers look awesome; i love the idea of pyrex glass for the heater's casing.

so what size heater should i get for the 40? would a 150 do or should i buy a 200 watt heater.

:iagree:

if you're using canister I'd recommend hydor ETH, but if you just want an internal heater I'd def agree with visi-therm stealth
