I am trying something new and different, a planted nano setup in a bowl. I found these real nice little bowls manufactured by Live with Nature, the one-gallon Luminous Aquarium. The Luminous bowls feature artistically layered bits of color around their bases and top rim. I had never seen anything like this and the pictures in their online store were so pretty. Here is the link over to their main site:

I was impressed with the price tag on the Luminous, especially for a hand-blown, Made in the USA glass piece. While ordering I selected the Earth Aquarium. I liked the look of the natural, earthy hues in that one, and I imagined that the colors would contrast well with a little nano planting inside. Last night when I got home the box was waiting there for me.

I also got a quick shot of the Luminous in situ.

This will be a fun, refreshing little project. I intend to just light up the bowl with the diffuse sunlight coming through the window--It makes such a neat effect with the colors. I might dose with Excel.

Wow. I'm rather partial towards the autumn & ocean myself... I'm interested to see how you plant this. The colored glass could easy detract from or become muddled by the plants.

Mainly I just really like the effect of the light coming through the glass. I did stick a plant in there quick--didn't get a picture--and the green contrasted real well against the brown and amber colors. Probably you wouldn't want to put plants in the green "Forest" model--it could get to be a muddled scene.

Hey fishycat I saw your response over in that other thread. Thank you for stopping by there. I need to go update that one.

Very neat bowl :)

I could just fill them with water to have on my window sill and be happy.

Very pretty. As a nano planted tank, it could be awesome.

But I'd like the product/company a lot more if those weren't being marketed as suitable for fish. From their website: "The Luminous Aquarium Betta Bowl is the perfect home for your Betta or small fish to fit any lifestyle." And there are constant comments about bettas and photos of the bettas that are supposedly living happily in those bowls with no heater, no filter, no plants, no decor ... &*#%^()!!

I am planning to stock it with RCS. I did well with them in a provisional little no-tech 2.5g setup before.

Hey thanks for that link fishycat. That is a real interesting little article.

I wonder why she used bubblers in the 2-gallon setups(?). It seems to me that that would cause most of the desirable CO2 to outgas rapidly. Perhaps she set them up with a slow bubble rate.
