I have ebayed a used magnum 350 pro on ebay for about $40 and was looking around at filter mods when I run across this mod http://www.thewatersnake.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1798
I thought this looked like a pretty cool mod. Since I'm getting the pro version with bio wheels I don't think I really need bio media in the canister. Was curious what everyone's opinion of it is.

looks like a easy DIY that should work fine.

Actually that's quite cleaver becasue it dose talk away from the need for the hollow basket by replacing it with a porous sponge. But its very important in a circumference filter that the center section of structure not be dense or it will defeat the purpose of water ability to flow toward the center strainer pump without dropping GPH, and that sponge looks to be porous enough. The only thing missing is the fine outer layer which could be Poly-batting which would do 2 things, 1st mechanical polishing with excellent endurance, 2nd the Poly-batting is excellent at sealing off bypass gaps in the sponge and top bypass grate. As far as the bio-wheels go I don't want to bust your concept but they have pretty negligible impact on supporting bacteria, defiantly far and away less then the sponge he is using IMO. I have a whole bag of new Marineland bio wheels I haven't yet thrown away. Ill send them to you for the cost of shipping if you want them.

GOOD MOD, Although the photos appear a bit short distorted.

Thanks for the input. There is a link on there where you can get the sponge and modded pvc for $22. Not sure what the price of the sponge alone is but it might not be a lot more than the parts to mod it yourself.

Looks like the poret foam filters are $25. Would a sponge from a hydor v sponge filter work on this? Its about the right diameter but possibly not long enough.

This MOD Is basically using the more friendly user sponge as opposed to the complicated basket, just like the CFS500 only much smaller. I have to warn you though before you go out and buy a sponge make sure it fairly pours as a fine sponge will cut efficiency and endurance down dramatically, and I recommended you leave enough room to allow a fine thin layer of Poly batting. It appears from the photos this mod left plenty of room as seen below. Also in the bottom photo the sponge gap at the motor intake may allow substantial bypass, a longer sponge to the base of the motor intake cover by Poly blanket would insure 0 bypass. Other then that its a great looking MOD and I might try it using pieced together porous FX5 sponge.

Below you see basically the same thing the basket representing the necessary porous center of the circumference with the Poly and blue-bond layer on the outer most orbit for polishing. This basic concept is what make it work, plug the center with fine sponge and you have defeated the design efficiency. The sponge being used above look OK and porous enough.

Yeah I agree his sponge could be longer. Gunner did you ever glue two sponges together and if so was it acceptable? What glue would work? I think I will try this mod. either with the poret (a little pricey for just modding 1 filter or possibly 2 hydor V's replacement foams glued end to end and cut to the right height. I think the hydor is an open cell sponge. The V size is 4" in diameter which I think leaves room for wrapping with poly.
