Hi everyone I'm new to fish keeping and need some advice pls I started up my new tank 7 weeks ago and was running a internal filter for 5 weeks eveything was fine water levels good but my filter was very loud so I brought a new fluval 206 and was running them together had a good look at tank on Monday and saw that 4 of my fish had popeye treated it stright away with antibiotic .why did this happen my tank is 3 ft I've 4 mollies 4 tetras 1 clown loach 1 krijb 2 gourami. Do I have to strip my tank down. And I've been doing 25% water changes to get my levels back to normal as my nitrats was 100 dxown to 50 now..:(I
 
Dal, a few questions. Did you see a cycle prior to adding fish? i.e. Did Nitrites spike followed by a sharp drop to zero, followed by continually rising nitrates? Suggest you read through this. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?84598-Freshwater-cycling

Also make sure you get a good, liquid test kit. I think i rememver reading that high nitrites, nitrates or Ammonia can all bring upon popeye, especially when you see it in more than one fish.

In the mean time.... Daily water changes.... good luck!
 
Hi thanks for replying so quick.I was getting my water tested at my local fish shop and they said my water was fine and to put the 2 filters together. Soon as I see popeye I brought a test kit but only strip ones.my readings are no3 is 50 no2 is 0 ph is 7.5 giving medicine can I still do water changes eveyday but how much and I've been told to take carbon filter out .don't want to lose my fish as my kids and I love them what's there chances of living.
 
From what I have read, when multiple fish get popeye it is typically a water quality issue. I would get the liquid test kit, you need to check ammonia. If that is zero, I would do s substantial water change 50%, then treat with the medicine. If there is ammonia, you need to do daily water changes to keep it low, and bring the nitrates down, as this may be the culprit.

What is the dosage frequency of the medication?
 
Antibiotics do the same thing to a fish tank that they do in your stomach. They destroy any and all bacteria populations, good and bad. Antibiotics should be used in a quarantine system only where a sick fish can be isolated and treated using medications that would actually do more harm than good in your display tank. Depending on how much you used and for how long, you may have actually re-started your tank's cycle since it's so new.
 
Another mistake was following the advice of your LFS. Sure your water checked out fine. But as kiddevo pointed out, you actually have to SEE the cycle. You should be doing tests yourself with good quality titration(liquid) test kits. They were more than happy to sell you all those fish for a tank that wasn't even two months old.
 
Thanks for advice wot is the best test kit to buy .I think your right bushkill my tank is going though a cycle. Should I do 50% wc eveyday till levels are good.

Forgot your question I'm putting in interpet anti internal bacteria dose says 10mls for a 2 dose treatment day 1 and 4. My tank is 120 liters.

API makes a good liquid test kit. You need to know your ammonia levels, if you are not cycled, I am guessing they are high, stressing the fish.
