I have the worst luck on Red Cherries.

I started a 20 gallon months ago with lovely 10 red cherries and 8 amanos. Semi planted with A big clump of Java moss in a corner spreading. They were doing well until around December their population dropped from 30+ to give or take 5. Everything was fine. And had no idea what was going on. My amanos had a feast during December :/....

So around the end of December starting January, the population started to rise. That give or take 5 shrimp went 40+ the last time I counted which was at the end of May.
Yey :)

Now during June, esp. Now, their population is decreasing again. Yesterday, 3 being eaten by amanos. They looked fresh. Like freshly died...not pink. And today 6ish same thing. Fresh. Parameters is good and has stayed the same during the past months. I fear this is the start again.

I noticed the decrease because many are usually in the sponge filter sponge cover. And on the Java Moss. They were super red ones and were easy to spot. Now, all I see are clear males and a very few red females.

Sigh :(

Hope everything gets better. This is really just a thread to express my frustration and stress from throughout the day.

Oh here's a question. When do you usually do your water changes? I mean the day? I do mine every Sunday. What about you guys?

I understand your fustration. All the ones I had in my main tank died last month. I later found out that it was because I sprayed air freshener while the tank didn't have the top :(

Do u remember spraying something or doing anything out of the ordinary days before your shrimps died?

Ah that sucks. I guess as long as the population doesn't drop to one shrimp it isn't too bad because they can reproduce back to larger numbers and it's like a natural circle. Do you know what their average lifespan is? Could it just be that?

Since you guys are keeping shrimp maybe you know an answer to this. Where is a reliable place to get special shrimp like blue tiger and others that are blue and just really brightly colored (someone on here has a thread he updates with pics from time to time of an amazing shrimp collection). What would be better is an active member on this forum that breeds. Any suggestions appreciated =)

Maybe you have use something with copper in it. Copper can kill your shrimps. Warm water has copper in it from your water heater. Use cold water. Some chemical (meds. and flourish) has copper in it.

@ken

I don't think it would be a copper problem. Unless copper comes back to the aquarium after it gets taken out by meds etc.

Plus, I have other aquariums with the same water source for over years with Amanos. I've only had one die so far out of the 20+ :) gotta love these guys. I'd reccomend them to anyone as they are active and fun to watch.

The sad part with this is that it's the super bright reds that go first then it's usually the dulls that are the last :(

However, I do have a few newborns throughout the tank. Hope they survive. Thanks guys. I just hope I don't get an extinction in my aquarium :/

Change or clean out your substrate. You might have something in you substrate that is bad to shrimp. Maybe it is time to clean your tank really good and redoing it. How can your other tank be fine with shrimp and not this one. You use the same water and shrimp food.

I agree with kenjivaj. When I had cherry issues, I'm pretty sure it stemmed from the black gravel I used for the substrate. Prior to putting this into the tank, I spent a lot of time cleaning it. Didn't matter, it still gave off something that would slowly kill off the shrimp. Luckily, I was able to clean it enough times with a gravel cleaner and the tank balanced out. I've read that dangerous sulfur packets can be trapped in gravel and that can sometimes kill out benthinc organisms (doubtful here but possible). Sometimes species like malaysian trumpet snails can be helpful in this situation as they will bury into substrate and keep it ventilated.

Aside from that, I'd look at your water conditions. If the PH is high enough (I keep mine around 7.6) and the temp is good (hard to have bad temp with cherries unless it's too high), then I'd be apt to look at potential poisonous contaminants in your water supply. As said, copper is one of the worst and even the slightest amounts will be fatal to shrimp.

Another potential issue would be if the tank is fully cycled but I assume it is.
