i have found a tiny serpent star fish hitch hiking in my tank, the tank is only at the live rock stage, but i wondered if i needed to provide any food for the little critter?

Chances are the star will find the food it needs. I wouldn't be concerned about feeding it but if you must try to target feed it so that excess food doe not sit in the tank. Also, if you have one you likely have many more. They will work their way in and out of crevices/holes in the rock cleaning and eating what they find.
Thanks guys, the ammonia spiked in the tank and the little mite died
