You could put a sponge over the filter intake. I personally prefer the sponge filters for fry tanks though. And they make sponge filters for big tanks too I believe.

The 110 pumps 500gph, the 70 pumps 300gph. Allowing for substrate and decorations a 40 gallon tank likely only holds around 30 gallons of water. For a light-medium stocking level the tank volume should be circulated about 5x/hour, for a heavy stocking level (like Malawi mbuna) up to 10x/hour is better. Unless you're doing a hillstream tank the 110 would definitely be overkill.

also thats what the pumps do. once its full of media it does less. it slows down even more once the sponges starting to get clogged.
I'll get loaches not hill stream loaches, and should I replace the sponges once a month or more?

Replace the sponges when they start to fall apart, otherwise just rinse them weekly in a bucket of tank water when you do partial changes.
Another thing would 25% water changes weekly be good? Or should I do more?
