Hey all. I'm moving from San Francisco, CA to Tempe, AZ and need advice on how to best get my fish/shrimp/plants from here to there. I will have a car and plan on moving them and my cacti via car. I was thinking empty the tanks, bag the fish and plants and just move it that way, but I'm not sure how to do that. I have A LOT of fish (well kinda... for a college set-up I guess). My 30 is pretty beat up, I'm thinking it'll break in the move so I'm going to probably upgrade that to a brand new 40. I have 3 killis, 13 tetras, 3 otos, 2 dojo loaches, 1 angel, 2 SAEs, 3 cories, 3 endlers, 1 threadfin rainbow, 3 amano shrimp, and about 20 RCS, along with a variety of plants (not all in the 30, I have several tanks :) ). Advice? Also, anyone from AZ, greater Phoenix area have any favorite stores? I sure am going to miss my LFS and it's owner :/

Wow. You are finally getting away from the dramas. I think its better if you have someone ship your fishes and shrimps for you to your new place. Driving them around made not be such a good idea. You also can try to sell some of your fishes and buy them later.

Buy yourself a battery operated airpump and put your fish in a large cooler. It is only an 11 hour drive from the Bay Area to Tempe.

I've only done about a ~7 hour drive, but from my experience large bucket or a cooler is a good container. There's a lot of sloshing around during the trip, so I wouldn't say that an air pump is needed...but you've got a ways more to go so it would definitely be the safe choice.

House plants may be brought into AZ without problem as long as they are bug-free and in soil (not yard dirt). I think your aquarium plants will be fine and if they are not allowed for some weird reason, all that will happen is they will confiscate them. No fine or ticket or anything. You can get more info here:

I live 80 miles NE of Phoenix. I hope you enjoy Tempe, Aviva! I hear ASU is a lot of fun.

Most aquarium plants are illegal to bring in as well. You can possess them and get them ( most of them) locally, but you cant transport them. At least this was true a couple yrs ago, most aquarium plants are/were considered Noxious Weeds.

I live in Tempe. It is nice and quiet.

Thanks for the replies. Yup, getting away from the drama :). My cacti are definitely house plants in potting soil, so should be ok, and I would count my aquarium plants "house plants" since they stay in my house ;) kidding, but yea, a cooler sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of shipping them to myself, but I don't want to risk it. My angel and killis in particular because I have serious emotional attachments to them; and all my fish actually... they have all been through a lot with me since I got them and they are the first stock I've managed to keep alive and well for over a year (took me a while to get a hang of everything, esp. with crappy water quality), through moving around, and other various disasters. Any other people have experience with moving with fishies have advice?

Hey Mike, we're almost neighbors! Tempe being "quiet" is like calling Payson a party town! lol

Starve them for a few days before the move to keep the transport water cleaner.
