Help my betta!

I'm having problems posting on this thread, and I couldn't even send a pm to Juice. I'm getting the message "Internal Server Error" so maybe my comment is too long so I'm going to try to send my comments in three smaller posts. Hope this works.

Maracyin Plus is a good combo of Sulfadimidine and Trimethoprim and has what the manufacturer calls "medicated bio-spheres" which attach to the body for better absorption. Not all antibiotics are absorbed well through the skin, but this is one of them. You could treat the water and also soak some food in that or make some gel food with it in there as well so that Finley gets some internally.

If you have kanamycin medicated flake and he eats that really well you could do that alone since if this is a bacterial infection aeromonas is likely the culprit and kanamycin works well for that. I have kanaplex (crystals/powder) that I put in the water and also use to make food. Kanamycin is another antibiotic that is absorbed well into the skin and enters the bloodstream that way.

If Finley really likes the taste of the kanamycin flake and scarfs it down heartily, then I'd say go with that. If it's going to be hard to get him to eat it then I'd go with the Maracyn Plus.

Having said all this, if he doesn't seem to improve with the antibiotic treatment, but also doesn't get worse and/or manifest frank signs of infection we may be able to confrim the diagnosis of ruptured swim bladder.

lf it is ruptured swim bladder there is a last ditch thing you can do, but it will take fortitude on your part.

danggit!!!

ADDENDUM: well, shoot! I'm having a devil of a time trying to get my whole post on here, but it took that one word post, no problem.

I keep trying, but keep getting the error message.

You can soak his food in any antibiotic medication and feed it to him. It doesn't have to be an 'antibiotic medicated food' per say. I would treat his water, as well, as the antibiotics will ultimately be absorbed into his body. The medicated food will just get it in him a bit faster.
Dropsy can be caused by any number of things and is not limited to any one cause. The epsom salts in his water will help reduce swelling, so I'd definitely use it with the Maracyn plus and see if it helps him. It's a good starting point anyway since there is no way to be sure exactly what is causing his condition.

Thank you for clearing that up, im not use to having to deal with illnesses and meds so im glad i know now that i dont have to go out and buy specialized antibiotic foods and can often use what i have on hand. Im hoping it doesnt turn out to be dropsy, from what Ive read its usually fatal :/
