So I got two mystery snails to help out with cleaning the tank. I got them on Tuesday. They zoomed around the tank Tuesday night, and then except for a glimpse of one Thursday, I didn't see either since. I looked and I looked, and no luck. Then today I woke up, and I found them! Yay! Except they were on the intake part of my powerhead. BAD. VERY BAD. Because their itty bitty faces and some of their bodies were sucked in through the slots. Today is a sad day. :(

Now, first of all I have no idea how long they were there. It could have easily been a couple days and I just missed them when I was looking. Either way though, my powerhead was taking in snail bits and I'm assuming, spewing some back out...? My goldies are gonna find them and say "Yay, protein!" but I'm worried about decomposing snails in my tank. I just did a water change last night...should I do another one?

Secondly, they're stuck. I got the little cappy thing off the bottom that they were hanging onto and I tried to pull them out (grossest thing EVER, btw), but they're still sticking. I can't get them off. TIPS PLEASE?!

Thirdly, I'd like to still keep some in my tank. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again?

Thanks guys.

Are they still alive? Oh man... I've never had power heads, so, I don't know WHAT to do about this one... Turn the power heads off & see if they can free themselves if they're still alive, I guess. Otherwise, you'll have to dig them out. (gross) You're going to have to see if you can get a sponge cover, or some nylons, or something to cover the powerhead intake so they can't get stuck in there again. Snails= not so smart & they'll crawl on it again, if they think there's something to eat there. So sorry. :(

A sponge over the intake......like for a power head reverse flow...

They aren't alive anymore....they're bodies got shredded when they were pulled through. I feel so stupid, but I didn't think that they would do something like that. Today is just a really bad day.

Rbishop, thanks I'd never heard of those. I'll look into it before I get any more.

Sorry for your loss. I just hate it when a snail dies.

Sorry to hear about them. Great names. I bought my first two snails a couple weeks ago. One of the. Had been acting weird even at the fish store but I figured it was big enough and would be fine. He died a few days later =) look at the classifieds here on AC and consider some blue ramshorns. They look amazing

Thanks guys. I put my betta down today too, so it's been rough. He was just old and not doing well.

I probably won't be getting more snails for a little while.

I am SO sorry that happened to you - the same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I felt horrible about it. I dismantled the encasement over the intake, then pushed her through the slots with a small screwdriver. I covered the intake area with pantyhose and re-assembled. Haven't had any more problems. I don't know about the protein/fish issue, though as I have a snail only tank. Take Care.

Thank you. I just ended up tossing the powerhead, I tried something similar to your screwdriver technique and it was a no-go. They were suctioned onto it pretty darn good. I'll be getting sponges to go over all the intakes and some new snails in a month or so from a fellow forum member.
