10 gallons aren't great at all for cichlids. theres hardly any surface space for territory try something like blue ram if you absolutely have to but if not i suggest you try guppy or swordtail

The problem I find with shellies in 10's is that unless you have a place to give fry to then they can quickly overpopulate the tank.
now if you put them in a blender an puree them i bet you could fit about 2000
just kidding personally i would not go less than 30g but dwarf cichlid might fit
