pruning ???

hmmmm ok i have some on a bogwood and the roots are about 2'' or so i just wasn't digging the look of them floating out there in the water like that.... but if thats the case i will just leave them alone

I wouldn't because this is where it gets all it's nutrients. I guess if you really need to like it's getting out of control you can. But I don't know if I would actively prune it.

This is incorrect. The hairy root-like structure of the java fern is a hold-fast, not a true root. As such it delivers no nutrients to the plant.

Prune away...
