Automatic 2007 Toyota Coralla CE. I don't know how to drive a manual and this is my 3rd automatic car.

I drive an automatic now, but always had manual transmissions in South Africa. I miss them!

I always drive a manual when there is a choice. I owned an automatic once when I was too broke to be choosy about what I bought. I drive automatics when I get a rental in the US because that is all they have.
You can call me a control freak but when I am in an automatic, I feel like the car is controlling me. Snow, rain or ice or winding mountain roads all behave much better with a manual once you learn how to use it. I feel somehow crippled without my own choice of gears and how quickly I apply the torque to the drive wheels.

How can you balance an automatic around corners? All 2 of the one's I've had changed gear half way round the corner...throw ice/snow/wet conditions and you're off the road! Unless you have all the electric gismo's luxury cars have atm.

Another optional transmission is the new Sequential Manual Gearbox. This enables sporty, rapid gear changes through all seven gears via the steering wheel paddles or selector lever, without the use of a clutch. Dynamic Driving Control options (Sport button) also enables for faster engine response.

My '06 Elantra has a 5 speed manual, my '92 F-150 has an AOD auto and my '70 Cougar has an FMX auto. The mpg is better on the manual, but it's more fun to drive my Cougar.

You don't need to. Just drive slower. Or pre-empt it with a downshift. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to adapt to these things.

Then again, I don't even bother doing any of the above any more...my current rides have traction control. A lot of generic cars (like mine) hitting the sales lots these days have this feature, and they're not luxo-rides by any means.

Okay, I'll admit it...my '69 Stringray convertible, painted in GM Monza Red (balanced, blueprinted mouse motor, Rochester Q-Jet, stiffer springs and sway bars, polyurethane bushings all around, gas shocks, SS brakes) was *gasp* an auto (TH400 tranny w/ a B&M shift kit). I know, V-8sports cars are supposed to have a hulking manual like a Muncie M22 Rockcrusher 4-speed, but even with that automatic handicap, "Big Red" made 60mph in first gear, would spin the tires on dry pavement going into second gear (would have to let up on the gas a little to let the big Goodyear Eagles hook back up), and then it was like an artillery shot to almost 100mph before tagging third gear. Even with those wide gaps between gear ratios, it still hauled the mail; displacement and torque on a well-built V-8 can make up for a lot of things. :woot:

Nice Job NA for bringing this thread back from the dead!! LOL!!

but i prefer my auto transmission thanks;)
"Cabana Boy" has his ways *wink* *wink*

Wow old thread! I vote manual.

There is nothing I like about an automatic. I feel in the future cars will drive themselves and we will all be passangers. Not if I have anything to do with it, I will hold on to whatever manual controls I can. Stick shift transmission, stick 4x4, manual lock in hubs... all are more reliable IMO and shift the way you want them too. Plus its added cost to get auto that I dont need to spend, last vehicle I bought, an F150, auto was like $1,000 option. There are also things you simply cant do with an auto. I like having more control of my vehicle.
