You do need some sort of bacteria source to seed the tank, even if it's a handfull of gravel from an established tank. The problem is FW bacteria is a different animal than SW bacteria. At 1.017, it's SW.
After much agonizing over where to get a good source of bacteria I bought a 20 lb bag of "Ocean Direct" I planned ordering Bio-Spira, but my LFS guy talked me into CaribSea Ocean Direct substrate that contains bacteria. I was totally skeptical but it was about half the cost having the Bio-Spira shipped overnight. So after 3 days my Nitrite has spiked and I'm showing 20 Nitrate. I've cut halfed the ammonia but am hoping to see my Nitrite going down.
Thanks! I know it is not quite ecologically correct but I like rocks and have an abundance so I will rotate them often. Hopefully it will provide variety in my GSP's surroundings not a cleaning nightmare for me! Live and learn I suppose... so far I'm really enjoying just learning all about brackish fish keeping. This forum has been indispensable so thanks to you all.
