Does anybody know for a fact if snails or shrimp need light to survive? I'm looking to save on electric. They are fed all sorts of homemade snailo and algae wafers, vege sticks with calcium (Ken's), fresh veggies, seaweed (sushi grade) and green beans...just to name a few.

Snails don't need light to survive. Switch on your light at least 4 hours a day or for viewing pleasure only unless you have plants in there.

Indirect light is fine for inverts, and fish for that matter. As long as there are no live plants,an aquarium light is not necessary.
