OK - SOOOO, I just got back home from a 3 day trip and I had a buddy feed and look over my fish while I was gone. Some of you may remember the other thread about the troubles I had with my Discus. They are now all Eating and Look very good except for two of them.

Some of you may remember In the end of the last thread I mentioned something white on the head of my Brilliant blue. WELL after being gone for 3 days it seems to me that I now have a Hole In The Head Problem. Not only that But Its showing up on the Turk also. There are noticable spots where the flesh has bin eaten away forming a cavity of sorts and you can see fungus in some of thoes spots. The only thing that throws me off is that I can see 1 small white dot on the Brilliants tail right where his boddy area ends (on the body area) if that makes cence? The Briliant is more advanced than the Turk but they both have it! I dont see it on anyone else Yet but I guess I am screwed nomatter what!

I plan to seperate them into a hospital tank tomarow (I gota go get the tank) and start agresive treatments and possible salt baths. WHat do you guys think??? WHat should I do for the rest of the fish in the tank? Anything? What would you advise for treatment? I just got home a few Hrs ago so I am stuck till tomarow. THEY are eating well and looking fat and happy other than that but to me HITH is freking major! Please let me know what ya think.

Thanks, Arkangel77:help:

Pics would be helpful to diagnose. But if you are correct...

HITH is another one of those diseases that has not been studied extensively enough to pinpoint a major cause. Most theories deal with deteriorating water quality, poor diet (specifically a lack of vitamins), and/or the invasion of hexamita protozoans. Sometimes the use of carbon filtration is talked about but I really don't see much validity in that argument. I personally think it is caused by a general dose of stress, as it is only seen in captive fish. So techincally any one of these stressors could be to blame. To start off:

Tank size and full stock?
What are the params?
What is your maintenance schedule?
What is your feeding schedule?

I would QT for now and keep water as pristine as possible. No sense in medicating or doing salt baths if the cause is not parasitic. That would produce more stress in the end.

Thanks for the reply. Last check Amo & Nitrite were ZERO. Nitrate was 10 Before water change and 5 after. Temp is back to 84. I change 50% about 2 times a week (NOW) was not in the past. I feed several times a day tetra bits, Frozen foods (blood worms, beef heart, delight) and I also do flakes. Tank is a 180 and its stocked with about 21 Discus of various sizes.

I was having other problems with these fish for the last few weeks. the 2 I am talking about are part of a group I recently got and they are full grown. They have not taken the move well at all.

They are eating again and they look well but the HITH is looking BAD (to me). I have a camera but the pics wont come out well, I have tried. The HITH is getting worse and its getting worse fast (IMO).

UMM 2 to 1 I guess.

I feed twice as much frozen foods as I do Tetra bits & Flakes.

That could be the problem as they are not very heavy in vitamins A, C, and D which are thought to keep HITH away. You could try either feeding more flakes/bits or enriching the meaty foods with vitamins.

I could also be way off base. I do not know much about discus diet.

I thought Cichlid Delight was a fortified food BUT I dont know?

WHY was this thread moved? I need help from Discus experianced folks or at least I would like them to see this thread.

Arkangel, take a look at this.

You will need to treat the whole tank. Don't give up, it can be cured rather easily if you follow the recommended directions. It's probably been brewing in the discus all along and hopefully will be the last of the problems for you now that you're feeding them better and you have increased the water change routine for them.

I got that flake from Angels plus sitting under the stand - I will up the temp and look for the meds recomended. I have already incresed my water change frequency.

I guess this is what I get for posting in 2 different areas. ANYWAY.

How long should I leave the temp raised? For the weeks worth of treatment? I will go try to find the medications locally - I should be able to do so. Thanks, Arkangel77

PS any experiance with clout???

I have heard of it for HITH
