I'm setting up a 55 gallon tank that was given to me. I will have an aquaclear 110 for the main filter with something else, not sure what yet, that I have laying around. I would like to center this tank around angel fish. The only other thing I want in this tank besides angels is maybe about 6 panda cories.

How many angels should I start out with? I don't mind some aggression but I don't want to be freaking out trying to find some where to put the fish that is getting killed etc. I do have a 75 gallon communtiy tank with 1 angel, so I could concieveablly put one or two in there if I had to. I really don't know that much about angel behavior or stocking situations. Just trying to get all the tips I can ahead of time.

Thanks so much!

First off, panda cory are not recommended to be put in with angels as they are a smaller cory. As for how many can you put in there? Well, until they start to form pairs you should be able to get away with about 5 in there. It really depends on how often you are able to do water changes and such as for stocking until they pair off. Once pairing starts I would have one possibly 2 pair but only if there is something that helps to separate the tank so pairs can have their territories.

ok, I've been thinking/reading about this. I've read a lot of places that you are pretty much safe from aggression with 2 angelfish in a 55, and even 3 because it is not likely that you will get a pair out of only 3. I don't really care if I have a pair or not anyway. I wouldn't have any room for the babies and I don't want to have to sell any.

Is that correct?

Do you want a pair to form, or you just want to end up with one?
What size will you be starting with, like a quarter size?
Is it going to be a planted tank, with lots of cover?
I do not see the problem with the corys in the tank, you can get different types.
You can start with 5 as stated, but will have to more them as they grow, you will not be able to keep 5 in this tank.
3 would be max, but if a pair develops, the 3rd will have to be moved.
What ever you do, it is best if all angels are added to the tank at the same time and provide some cover.
Good luck.

we posted at the same time. lol

I do have a 75 gallon community with one juvenile angel right now, and the ones I'm going to be getting for the 55 are juveniles too. So I figure If I get 3 and 2 do pair up, I could just put the other one in the 75 gallon and then have 2 in each tank.

with any combination of numbers you still must keep a watchful eye on the angels.

they are Cichilds and sometimes they are very un -predictable.
you can start with with 3-4 then watch.
move fish as needed.

If someone could verify this for me please, I've heard that angels can be kept in large enough numbers to form a shoal and this reduces their aggression. What numbers are we talking about and how large a tank?

Great Question! Thanks for adding it!

As stated by Star_Rider, no mater what numbers you have you might have a problem with aggression, plus the size matters.
Angels get very big!
There is no magic number.
5 years a go, I had 5 in a 55Gl tank and ended up with just a pair. It just happened.
Keep in mind they are chichlids!

yes in large number angels can and do shoal.

they do however, need to have room enough as spawn pairs will happen.

you are talking a large number to do this.. usually 15 + angels
you will need a large tank .. i would not try this with less than 200 gallon tank with good structure and cover.
