Hello,

I have 75g with Odyssey T-6 4x54w, 2 day and 2 nights on for about 7 hours everynight. Tank has been running for over 1 year. Is this strong enough for keeping clams? I just got crocea clam and want to if lighting is enough or I need to upgrade? I heard T-6 is stronger then T-5 and T-5 is the min you should use for Clams. Change about 4-5 gallons everyweek and add Part A and Part B everyweek after every water change. Thanks for any input.

t-6 is basically power compacts and odyssea's white bulbs are not very bright. I have their t-5 4x54w on a 75 and it lights it pretty decent. i plan on upgrading the ballast and reflectors tho. i would look into a better light for a clam and anything requiring high light. look for active cooling(fans) and indvidual reflectors.

The T6s you have are not stronger than T5s. "Actual" T6s or the ones you are referring to are actually a type of VHO lamp. In other words, a 48" lamp would be 110w @ 3/4" diameter. Yours are merely a fatter T5 lamp, which just cuts down on efficiency. If it had the added wattage, it would have somewhat made up for the inefficiency.

As far as being sufficient for clams, what else are you currently keeping?

I don't even know what kind of coral I have. The tank was my brother's, he moved out and told me the tank is mines now, take care of it. There is like 10 different kind of coral in the tank but the only 1 I know of is called "watermelon coral" I know the name because my brother told me "****... the watermelon is dying; it cost me $200 dollars" and I told him to point it out to me - "the pink one with green boarder". I am going to take some pictures and post them up. There are some coral in the tank that he got for $600 head that only open at night; 3 of them in the tank. When I heard that I was like "WHAT?!?!" $600?!?!

Sounds like a Steve Tyree Watermelon Chalice at that price. If that is dying, ya, need to do something quick. Big water change to start with. Need to do water tests to see what exactly is good and bad.

I had the tank for about 5 weeks before I even did water change because I didn't know what to do and saw some of the corals fading away about 3 of them. Then I found out you were suppose to change the bulbs out every 8-12 months. I then asked my brother if he ever change them out and he was like "no”. I was like “crap". last week I finally changed the bulb and changed about 2 bukcets of water. Two of the corals started to bloom again when they were almost died I think. The watermelon coral looks little better then it did last week; some of the color is coming back. I was suppose to add the Kent A and B every week but didn't know and was adding it every month. Below is link to how the watermelon coral look like.

Actually, Kent A/B is known as a "2 Part" and your supposed to add it daily. But you have to know at what rate your tank is consuming alkalinity and calcium to know how much to add back. You need a Alk and Ca test kit for that. Maybe the tank consumes so little of each that you can add it just once weekly.. tests will tell.

That's a chalice coral and a nice one at that. Just to be sure, you should send it to me so I can keep an eye on it in my tank ;).

The corals that "bloom" at night might be a sun coral or dendro. Are they orange/yellow and look like flowers? They need to be target fed with mysis shrimp as they are non-photosynthetic. Post more pics of your corals and tank/setup so we can help better. Have you tested your water recently? If so post your results.

yes, that's what the orange one is called I think. I have 7 of them in the tank. The other 3 that look like the dendro is white color and when the tentacles come out it's clear milky color. I'm pretty sure its watermelon coral. The one I have is solid green with no dots on it.

I need to go get the Ca and Alk testers later. Should I be testing the water everyday or every other day? Do you guys test everyday? Since I taken over the tank about 6 weeks ago, I just top off the water and finally changed the water last week. 2 weeks ago I got some fish and they all died from Ick. What kind of medicine is reef safe? I just don't want the corals to died. I have 2 tanks to take care of, 1 75g saltwater and 1 170g freshwater tank with Arowana. I will take pictures of both tank later when I get home.
