Do we have any car smart folks out there who can help?

No idea what the story is..but now is the not the time for any past differences stop you from talking your father-in-law. Might hurt at first, but simply saying "I need your help" can change things.. Trust your family.

I am just shy, and haven't met him, so it makes it hard to call and just start taking. I am a wuss.....:duh:

Hey, you talk to us,
and you don't even KNOW who/where/what we are. so???

We could be strange alien monsters...(Oh, I wasn't supposed to give that away?)

At least you know who he is.
Go for it.

Best of luck!

breeze, he's family I bet he'd b happy to help.

btw my wifes truck had the check engine light go on,. lean left bank.
took it to mechanic who cleaned a scored part on the throttle body but suspected it may not pass emissions.. so she got the waiver.. she took it in they tested and it passed. and runs much better.

it wasn't much for him to repair.

I bet dad in law can fix

;)

Oh man, its the engine computer. Its fried, gonna be over 1 grand to fix.... No turkey this year, no holiday shopping.

Go to a junkyard. My comp fried in my car and I paid 75% less then I would have at a dealer. I did have to pull it out myself but I'm sure they would do it for you.

Reading the thread I'd tend to agree with that diagnosis.

There are not many yards out here if any. I dont know anyone out here who would fix it for me. I cannot go to the motor pool and ask (They find out your husband is gone and then, well, I dont wanna kill someone) And all the shops I called say they wont do it unless I use their part :(

OUCH!

I'd find a second opinion and quote. There has to be an independent shop or two around there that works on Lexus'. That's a higher-end car, and the dealers charge high-end prices.

ECM repair/replacement: http://www.ecmsupply.com/

$100, not $1000. WAY cheaper than new. I don't know if the ECM has to be programmed for YOUR specific car or if you just need the right one and you can swap it in. But they should be able to tell you that. If you get your own repaired it should not be an issue.

IMHO it would be worth $50-100 to have someone other than the dealer check it out.
