I am so excited, I bought a 60 gallon acrylic tank a few days ago at my lfs. I have water in it, temp is around 80 degrees, and I have been running it for a few days now without fish. Today I decided to add 2 black mollies and 2 small guppies from my 10 gallon tank, to start the cycle. When should I expect to see the ammonia start to rise?

Your tank is beautiful!!!

Are you able to use some existing filter media from your other tank to jump start the cycle on your new one?

May take a while with that small of a load and that big of a tank. Do you have a good liquid test kit to monitor with? Is there any media in the other tank's filter you can move to the new tank to help establish it?

Thank you! I love the reef look, even though it looks fake! That's a good idea, I will get some media from my daughters tank. I am nervous abour opening the canister filter though!! Haven't done it yet... I just set it up and started it, don't really feel 100% comfortable with it yet, but I guess I'll have to do it sooner or later... lol

I could add more fish too, as I eventually will move them all to the big tank. Should I add more?

I would get some media over first...and then after 4-5 days, add slowly and monitor. Though best bet is to QT new fish in their own tank for a few weeks to not endanger existing fish with a disease being brought in.

I will move some media over and wait a few days. The fish I want to add are from my daughter's established tank, we have had them for about a year, they are disease free :) I also have to order the master kit...

While you are waiting for the fish after you put some media from your daughters tank, throw some fish food in to keep the bactiria alive.

I cycled my friends tank this way, only difference is I waited two day's after I put media in from my canister to his filter.

His tank was fully stocked within two weeks with no spikes of ammo at all!
