red algae in java moss

You could also dose some flourish excel. Just aim where you want the affected parts to be treated with a turkey baster and turn you anything that creates a current and wait like 5-15minutes and rinse and repeat the method until the problem goes away.

Can you pull out some of the algae and smell it? If it smells like Swampthing it's cyano, if it just smells like a plant it's something else. I think that white stuff mixed in with the moss might be fungus.

Yea, might be some fungus on there. Does the white stuff feel slimy and icky to the touch? Also fungus in aquarium is generally related to decaying or rotting plants or other organisms.

regardless what algae that is you need to start dosing NPK and micros regularly. your lights need to be looked into and you need to make sure you're getting good circulation in those areas.

you're going to find and hear more cures than you can shake a stick at. you need to address the root of your problem though. what is your tank lacking?

to me that looks like an array of things. could be early cyano, could be early staghorn, could be iron but that red looks nasty for sure. if that red is algae it's a very early form and i'd expect it to grow FAST!!! if you've recently added root tabs or fluorite in that area that could be the red also. if that's the case you'll want to wash that off in a bucket of tank water ASAP. anyway i'm unsure because if that is algae it has not taken on it's mature form yet but it will be much harder to control the longer you wait.

is that a painted terracotta like planter? looks like some paint may be washing off. if so i'd replace it and wash the plants off. that could be your red and your source of issues.

anyway the white definitely resembles fungus... use an old toothbrush to take that out for now unless you wash it out in the bucket.

i'm pretty sure i see bba in there too on the filter intake...

your moss looks like it may be starting to die. this may be the cause or an effect. either way taking care to properly fertilize will help it to fight back and will be a key to defeating your algae.

p.s. slimey and icky to the touch is exactly how i'd describe bba so that really won't help in diagnosis.

Do you think you could pull out all the moss at once and rinse off the red and white stuff off in a bucket of tank water? Maybe this is just a fluke and it won't come back once it's physically removed.

I have never seen anything that red in a freshwater tank, maybe it's some sort of funky fungus that will go away on its own.

As for ferts, I've never need to add anything to keep Java moss looking good. It's one of the hardiest plants you'll find. I had Java moss infest a tank way back when and I was stuck pulling strings of it out every week for years after I thought I'd removed it all.

3) type
4) schedule
